Gardeners Beddington Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Beddington is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a way that protects the health, safety, and welfare of our employees, clients, contractors, visitors, and members of the public. We recognise our responsibilities under relevant health and safety legislation and work proactively to prevent accidents, injuries, and ill health during all gardening and landscaping activities.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Our primary objectives are to prevent harm, reduce risk, and promote a culture of safety. We aim to identify hazards associated with gardening tasks, control potential risks, and continually improve our health and safety performance. Management and staff at all levels share responsibility for achieving these objectives.
Management Responsibilities
The management of Gardeners Beddington has overall responsibility for implementing and maintaining this Health and Safety Policy. This includes:
Ensuring that appropriate health and safety procedures are in place for all gardening, maintenance, and landscaping activities. Providing suitable tools, machinery, equipment, and personal protective equipment that are safe, properly maintained, and used correctly. Conducting and reviewing risk assessments for tasks such as lawn care, hedge trimming, tree work, planting, weed control, and waste handling. Providing employees with information, instruction, training, and supervision necessary to work safely. Monitoring health and safety performance and taking action where improvements are required.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee of Gardeners Beddington has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions. All team members are required to:
Follow company health and safety procedures and safe systems of work. Use tools, machinery, and protective equipment in accordance with training and instructions. Report hazards, defects, near misses, and accidents to management without delay. Co operate with management on health and safety matters, including attending training and briefings. Avoid misuse or interference with any equipment or measures provided for health and safety purposes.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before starting gardening work, our teams carry out appropriate risk assessments to identify hazards such as uneven ground, sharp tools, power equipment, falling branches, exposure to chemicals, manual handling tasks, and adverse weather conditions. The findings of these assessments shape our safe working practices and method statements.
Control measures may include using protective clothing, eye and ear protection, safe use of ladders, clear work area demarcation, and the selection of suitable tools and machinery for each job. Work is planned and supervised to minimise risk to clients, neighbours, passers by, and other third parties.
Use of Tools, Machinery, and Equipment
Gardeners Beddington ensures that all equipment used for gardening and grounds maintenance is fit for purpose and properly maintained. This includes mowers, trimmers, blowers, hedge cutters, chainsaws, and hand tools. Pre use checks and regular inspections are carried out, and any defective equipment is taken out of service until it is repaired or replaced.
Power tools and machinery are operated only by trained and competent personnel. Safety guards and devices are never removed or bypassed, and operating instructions are followed at all times. Fuel and other substances are stored and handled safely to prevent fire, spillage, or environmental damage.
Chemicals, Fertilisers, and Substances
When using gardening chemicals, such as weed killers, fertilisers, or treatments, we take care to protect people, pets, and wildlife. We select products appropriate to the task and follow the manufacturer’s safety data and instructions.
Control of substances includes safe storage, correct dilution and application, and the use of required personal protective equipment. We avoid unnecessary use of chemicals, seek safer alternatives where possible, and ensure that application areas are clearly identified so that clients and the public can keep clear as needed.
Manual Handling and Physical Tasks
Gardening often involves lifting, carrying, digging, and other repetitive tasks. Gardeners Beddington promotes safe manual handling techniques to reduce the risk of injury. Staff are trained to assess loads, use correct lifting posture, share loads when necessary, and use mechanical aids such as trolleys wherever possible.
Workloads and tasks are organised to avoid excessive strain, and regular breaks are encouraged, particularly in hot or cold weather conditions.
Traffic, Site Access, and Public Protection
On each site, our teams consider access, vehicle movements, and the presence of clients and members of the public. Vehicles and trailers are parked and loaded safely, and tools are not left unattended in places where they may cause obstruction or harm.
Where necessary, work areas are cordoned off, and clear communication is provided to anyone nearby. When working near roads, paths, or shared spaces, additional care is taken to manage traffic risks and maintain safe access routes.
Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, near misses, and dangerous occurrences are reported, recorded, and investigated. This enables us to learn lessons and improve our health and safety measures. Employees are made aware of emergency procedures relevant to their work, including what to do in the event of serious injury, fire, chemical spills, or other emergencies.
First aid provisions appropriate to the nature of our gardening activities are maintained, and staff know how to obtain medical assistance when required.
Training, Consultation, and Continuous Improvement
Gardeners Beddington provides ongoing health and safety training tailored to gardening and grounds maintenance work. Topics may include safe tool operation, working at height, manual handling, chemical safety, and environmental awareness.
We consult with employees on health and safety matters and welcome feedback from clients and partners. This policy and associated procedures are reviewed regularly and updated when legislation, best practice, or our working methods change.
Commitment to a Safe Gardening Environment
By taking a systematic, proactive approach to health and safety, Gardeners Beddington aims to ensure that all gardening services are carried out safely, efficiently, and with respect for the wellbeing of everyone involved. This policy reflects our commitment to maintaining high standards of safety across all projects and locations where we operate.
